Burj Khalifa lights up as Egypt create World Cup history
DUBAI – The UAE joined celebrations of Egypt's historic FIFA World Cup achievement as the Burj Khalifa lit up in the colours of the Egyptian flag following the Pharaohs' dramatic qualification for the Round of 16.
Egypt secured their first-ever place in the World Cup knockout stage after beating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at Dallas Stadium. The landmark victory sparked jubilant scenes across the UAE, home to one of the region's largest Egyptian expatriate communities, with celebrations continuing late into the night in homes, cafés and public venues.
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, congratulated Egypt on the historic feat, describing it as a "heroic performance" and saying that "the joy of the Arabs today is Egyptian". He praised the team's fighting spirit and entertaining display.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan also paid tribute to the Palestinian people after the match, thanking them for their support and offering prayers for their success and for those who had lost their lives. He later carried the Palestinian flag on the pitch as fans waved Palestinian keffiyehs and chanted in support.
On the field, Emam Ashour gave Egypt an early lead before Mohamed Hany's own goal levelled the score. After neither side could find a winner in extra time, Hossam Abdelmaguid converted the decisive penalty, with Australia's Harry Souttar and Lucas Herrington missing their spot-kicks. Mohamed Salah, making a surprise return from a hamstring injury, played the full match as Egypt booked a last-16 showdown with Argentina.
